Why Choose Laboratory Movers
in Los Angeles?

A lab move is more than commercial transport. Instruments, temperature-sensitive materials, heavy machinery, lab infrastructure and vendor schedules all have to be planned for.

Laboratory Movers is a specialized division of Hingham Moving Services. We completed a cross-country move of frozen research materials from the University of Chicago to a receiving lab in Los Angeles, with cold-chain equipment, monitored transport and documented handoffs. We provide:

  • Lab relocation planning
  • Scientific and analytical equipment moving
  • Frozen biological material transportation
  • Lab packing and custom crating
  • Heavy scientific equipment handling
  • Lab storage and staging
  • Interstate and cross-country lab moving
  • Coordination with lab staff, facilities teams and equipment vendors

Scientific and Laboratory
Equipment Moving

We move instruments, analytical equipment and specialized machinery for research organizations across Los Angeles and Southern California. Requirements vary by manufacturer, sensitivity, weight, size and building access; some instruments need custom packing, crating, stabilization or the manufacturer involved before they travel.

  • HPLC and chromatography systems
  • Mass spectrometers
  • Microscopes and electron microscopes
  • Centrifuges
  • Biosafety cabinets
  • Incubators
  • Ultra-low-temperature freezers
  • Lab refrigerators
  • PCR equipment
  • Analytical balances
  • Spectrometers
  • Lab benches and supporting machinery

Frozen Biological Materials
and Cold-Chain Transport

Specimens and research samples often have to stay within a defined temperature range from start to finish, including on interstate trips at ultra-low temperatures. Depending on the project, planning can include:

  • Ultra-low-temperature freezer transport
  • Dry ice and specialized shipping containers
  • Liquid nitrogen vapor shippers
  • Temperature monitoring and shipment tracking
  • Chain-of-custody documentation
  • Backup power and contingency planning
  • Coordination between shipping and receiving labs

Packing, Crating, Storage
and Interstate Moves

We pack and crate around each item’s dimensions, weight and sensitivity, with detailed inventories, photographs, protective wrapping and a planned loading order. Heavier equipment may need forklifts, hydraulic lifts or rigging. Storage and staging let equipment move in phases while a new facility is finished or installation is scheduled.

We run interstate and cross-country moves between Los Angeles and research destinations nationwide, with dedicated transport, temperature-controlled handling where needed, and scheduled delivery.

Westwood, UCLA and the
USC Health Sciences Campus

Westwood and West Los Angeles: UCLA and UCLA Health, with research in oncology, neuroscience, biomedical engineering, genetics and immunology, plus newer facilities such as the Center for Advanced Biotherapies. Moves here involve university departments, hospital operations, building management and restricted loading areas.

USC Health Sciences Campus: northeast of Downtown, home to the Keck School of Medicine of USC, with life sciences development near Cal State LA. Moves are planned around ongoing teaching and research.

Pasadena, Caltech and
the San Gabriel Valley

Pasadena: anchored by Caltech, with research in chemistry, biology, physics, engineering and materials science, plus biotech and technology companies nearby. Expect specialized equipment handling, manufacturer coordination and restricted building access.

Duarte and the San Gabriel Valley: City of Hope, a major cancer research and treatment center, plus research organizations and medical labs in Monrovia, Arcadia and Pasadena.

South Bay and
Thousand Oaks

Torrance and the South Bay: the Lundquist Institute for Biomedical Innovation on the Harbor-UCLA medical campus, plus medical technology, advanced manufacturing and research facilities across the South Bay.

Thousand Oaks and the Conejo Valley: a major biotech market, home to Amgen and a surrounding community of life sciences companies. The wider research community also includes Cedars-Sinai, Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, JPL and Charles R. Drew University.

Challenges of Moving
a Laboratory in Los Angeles

Traffic, distance and scheduling. Greater LA is big, and a move can mean long drives between sites. Traffic, loading restrictions, receiving windows and building access all affect pickup and delivery times, so routes and schedules are set with both labs in advance.

Heat and temperature-sensitive materials. Heat during loading, unloading or transit is a real risk for samples that need controlled temperatures. Frozen and refrigerated materials get the right containers, monitoring, handling times and contingency plans.

Sensitive equipment and facility rules. Campuses and medical facilities can restrict vehicles, docks, freight elevators and equipment movement. Heavy instruments need special handling, and sensitive ones may need manufacturer-approved prep, so we coordinate early with facility managers, lab staff and vendors.

Laboratory Relocation Experience:
University of Chicago to Los Angeles

Frozen research materials moved cross-country

We moved cryogenic and -80°C biological research materials from the University of Chicago to a receiving lab in Los Angeles. The multi-day trip used dry shippers, liquid nitrogen vapor shippers, mobile -80°C freezers with backup generators, real-time temperature monitoring, GPS tracking, chain-of-custody records and pre-mapped emergency cold storage, on a direct route with limited stops.

The shipment arrived on schedule with no sample loss or temperature deviation, and the receiving lab kept its research going with minimal disruption. Read the full University of Chicago case study.
