Laboratory Moving Services in Detroit
and Southeast Michigan

Laboratory Movers provides laboratory relocation services in Detroit, Southeast Michigan and throughout the state.

We work with universities, hospitals, biotechnology companies, pharmaceutical facilities and industrial research organizations. Detroit’s research community includes Wayne State University, Henry Ford Health, Detroit Medical Center and a growing number of biomedical and engineering facilities. The region extends to Ann Arbor, home to the University of Michigan’s research operations, and Oakland County, with university labs, medical facilities and automotive research.

Whether you’re moving one lab, shifting equipment between buildings or relocating a research facility out of state, we handle the planning, packing, transport and logistics for your project.

Why Choose Laboratory Movers
in Detroit?

A lab move takes more planning than a commercial move. Sensitive equipment, research materials, lab furniture and building access rules all affect how the job is organized.

Laboratory Movers is a specialized division of Hingham Moving Services, moving labs for scientific and research organizations nationwide. We provide:

  • Scientific equipment moving
  • Lab packing and custom crating
  • Temperature-controlled transport for sensitive materials
  • Lab furniture and casework moving
  • Storage and logistics
  • Interstate moves into and out of Michigan

Every move is planned around the lab’s equipment, materials, schedule, access conditions and day-to-day operations.

Scientific Equipment Moving
and Transportation

Each instrument is reviewed before the move. Manufacturer guidelines, dimensions, sensitivity and the destination all decide how it gets prepared, packed and transported. Depending on the project, that can include:

  • Ultra-low-temperature freezers and lab refrigerators
  • Centrifuges and analytical instruments
  • Microscopes and optical equipment
  • Chromatography and spectroscopy systems
  • Incubators and environmental chambers
  • Lab benches, casework and workstations

Some instruments need prep, disconnection or recommissioning by qualified lab staff or manufacturer-authorized technicians. We settle who handles what before moving starts.

Frozen and Temperature-Sensitive
Materials

Lab moves often include freezers, frozen samples and other materials that have to stay within a set temperature range.

Transport methods and handling are chosen based on the materials and the conditions they need. We’ve completed interstate moves of frozen research materials, including the one in our University of Chicago case study.

Packing, Crating, Storage
and Interstate Moves

We pack and crate sensitive or valuable equipment to protect it in transit, and move lab benches, cabinets and workstations along with the instruments. Storage and staging are available when equipment moves in phases or the new space isn’t ready.

For interstate moves, we plan transport between Detroit and research destinations anywhere in the United States.

Medical and Biomedical
Research Labs

Detroit’s Midtown and New Center neighborhoods hold major medical and academic institutions, including Wayne State University, Henry Ford Health and Detroit Medical Center.

Investment in research space is still growing. The Henry Ford Health and Michigan State University Health Sciences Research Center, scheduled to open in 2027, is planned to provide about 335,000 square feet for research in cancer, neuroscience, immunology and other fields. Moves in medical research settings take coordination with facility managers, manufacturers, research staff and building operations to limit interruptions.

University and Academic
Laboratory Moving

Southeast Michigan’s academic research extends to the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and Oakland University in Rochester. U-M’s North Campus Research Complex supports interdisciplinary research, and Oakland University has biomedical, engineering and specialized lab facilities.

Academic moves often involve several investigators, shared equipment, specialized instruments and schedules set by research programs. We plan the move around those constraints.

Industrial and Automotive
Research Facilities

Detroit’s automotive and manufacturing industries add demand for specialized equipment moving. Engineering and industrial research facilities can contain analytical instruments, materials testing equipment, precision measurement systems, environmental test chambers and other heavy machinery.

Unlike an office move, these jobs depend on each machine’s dimensions, weight, handling limits, transport needs and installation schedule.

Challenges of Moving
a Laboratory in Detroit

Michigan winters. Cold, snow and ice affect loading docks, road conditions and temperature-sensitive equipment. We plan loading times, transit and protection for instruments and materials that can’t sit in the cold.

Heavy industrial equipment. Materials testing systems and engineering equipment can be large and heavy. We check floor loads, door sizes, rigging needs and truck access before the move.

Active hospital and campus buildings. Medical and university labs often have restricted docks, shared elevators and short delivery windows. We confirm access and approvals with building management ahead of time.

Laboratory Relocation Experience
Across the Country

University of Chicago to Los Angeles: frozen research materials

We moved frozen biological samples from the University of Chicago to a receiving lab in Los Angeles using cold-chain transport, temperature monitoring and documented handoffs. University projects like this take careful equipment handling, building access planning and coordination between the teams at the origin and destination. Read the University of Chicago case study.

Ithaca, New York to Palo Alto, California: instruments and frozen materials

We prepared a cross-country relocation plan for a university research lab moving about 2,800 miles from Ithaca to Palo Alto. The inventory included LC-MS and GC-MS instruments, HPLC systems, reactors, chillers and freezers. Frozen and refrigerated materials were planned as a separate shipment with insulated containers, temperature monitoring and backup refrigeration.

Both projects are relevant to Detroit-area universities, medical research institutions and organizations moving scientific operations across state lines.
