Laboratory Moving Services in San Francisco
and the Bay Area

Laboratory Movers provides laboratory relocation services in San Francisco, the Peninsula and the greater San Francisco Bay Area.

We work with biotechnology, pharmaceutical, university, medical, clinical and research organizations on local, regional and interstate lab moves. Services include scientific equipment moving, frozen biological material transportation, packing and crating, lab storage and staging, and long-distance lab relocation.

San Francisco research runs from UCSF at Parnassus Heights and Mission Bay to independent research institutes and the Peninsula biotech campuses, and each brings its own moving requirements.

Why Choose Laboratory Movers
in San Francisco?

A lab relocation is more than moving furniture. You have to plan around instruments, sample temperatures, security and access rules, equipment vendors, and when both the old and new labs are available.

Laboratory Movers is a specialized division of Hingham Moving Services. Our relocation plans cover cross-country equipment transport, dedicated supervision, temperature-sensitive materials and staged warehouse delivery, matched to the actual equipment and buildings. We provide:

  • Lab relocation planning and equipment inventories
  • Sensitive instrument moving and specialized equipment handling
  • Frozen and refrigerated material transport
  • Equipment packing, labeling and protective crating
  • Lab equipment storage and project staging
  • Local, interstate and nationwide lab relocation
  • Coordination with facilities teams, building managers and equipment vendors
  • Photographic inventories and receiving-area verification

Scientific and Laboratory
Equipment Moving

We plan equipment moves for research and clinical facilities across San Francisco and nearby cities. Some instruments need vendor-directed shutdown and recommissioning; others need special crating, stabilization, lifting equipment or an assigned loading time. We sort that out during the inventory.

  • HPLC and chromatography systems
  • Mass spectrometers and spectrophotometers
  • Centrifuges and microcentrifuges
  • Microscopes and imaging instruments
  • PCR and molecular biology equipment
  • Biosafety cabinets and lab enclosures
  • Incubators, water baths and analytical balances
  • Lab refrigerators and ultra-low-temperature freezers
  • Cell analysis systems and automated equipment
  • Vacuum equipment, shakers and benchtop instruments

Frozen Biological Materials
and Cold-Chain Moving

Labs may need to move samples kept at 4°C, -20°C, -80°C or in liquid nitrogen. The packing method, target temperature and monitoring depend on the sample and the receiving lab, not just the freezer it came out of.

A cold-chain plan can include insulated containers, dry ice or gel packs, temperature probes, backup cooling supplies, sample identification and dedicated transport. We confirm sample classification, allowable temperature exposure, custody paperwork and the receiving lab’s readiness before anything ships.

Packing, Crating, Storage
and Interstate Relocation

We handle packing, rolling-bin transport, custom crating, labeling and organized placement in the receiving rooms. Temporary storage or staging helps when the two spaces aren’t available on the same date.

Long-distance moves from San Francisco can go anywhere in California or across the country. Climate-controlled equipment storage and storage for frozen or refrigerated samples are planned separately.

Mission Bay and
Dogpatch

Mission Bay and Owens Street: UCSF’s Mission Bay campus combines research, medical education and clinical care, with over a million square feet of research space. Nearby are Gladstone Institutes, Chan Zuckerberg Biohub San Francisco and research-focused commercial buildings. Moves here often run in phases while neighboring labs keep working.

Dogpatch and the Central Waterfront: just south of Mission Bay, with growing life sciences and medical uses, including UCSF’s planned Clinical and Life Sciences Building at the Power Station redevelopment. Construction activity and changing occupancy dates are part of the plan here.

Parnassus Heights and
Zuckerberg SF General

Parnassus Heights and the Inner Sunset: UCSF’s original campus is a tight cluster of hospital, teaching and lab buildings. Deliveries can span several buildings or floors, so equipment size, elevators, service entrances and schedules are checked before trucks and crews are assigned.

Zuckerberg San Francisco General and Potrero Hill: clinical and translational research tied to the hospital. Moves in hospital-connected labs need close coordination with facility operations, receiving departments and working clinical areas.

South San Francisco and the
Peninsula Biotech Corridor

South San Francisco is a major biotech center, home to Genentech and many other life sciences companies. Organizations along the Peninsula move equipment between commercial labs, UCSF-connected collaborators and sites in San Francisco, San Bruno, Brisbane and beyond.

The wider research community includes UCSF, the Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center, the Cardiovascular Research Institute, Gladstone Institutes, the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine and UC Berkeley across the bay.

Challenges of Moving
a Laboratory in San Francisco

Freight elevators, loading areas and dense campuses. Buildings in Mission Bay, Parnassus Heights and other research areas can have assigned docks, loading windows, access restrictions and little room to maneuver. We measure equipment, confirm elevator availability and building rules, and map the route before the truck arrives.

Traffic, hills and vehicle access. Steep grades, limited curb space and traffic complicate staging and timing, especially for large trucks. Site surveys identify approved loading spots, equipment routes and any permits or property-management approvals.

Keeping research going. Rooms and departments rarely stop at the same time. Instruments, general contents and temperature-sensitive materials are often scheduled separately, guided by vendor requirements and when the receiving lab is ready.

San Francisco to Bethesda, Maryland: multi-phase research shipments

We prepared three relocation plans for research materials leaving a San Francisco university lab for a federal research facility in Bethesda, Maryland, about 2,800 miles away. The shipments covered histology, osteocyte and fragility research, each with different temperature requirements.

The histology shipment included refrigerated materials around 4°C and 50 paraffin-associated boxes. The osteocyte shipment covered a -20°C freezer. The fragility shipment covered a -80°C freezer and 48 liquid nitrogen sample boxes with transport dewars. The plans called for insulated packaging, photographic inventories, labeling, monitoring, reserve cooling supplies and verification at the receiving end.
