Why Choose Laboratory Movers
in Philadelphia?

A lab move takes more planning than a commercial move. Instruments, temperature-sensitive materials, specialized equipment and building access rules all affect how the job is organized.

Laboratory Movers is a specialized division of Hingham Moving Services, moving labs for scientific and research organizations nationwide. We provide:

  • Scientific equipment moving
  • Lab packing and custom crating
  • Temperature-controlled transport for sensitive materials
  • Lab furniture and casework moving
  • Storage and logistics
  • Interstate moves into and out of Pennsylvania

Every move is planned around the lab’s equipment, materials, research schedule, building conditions and day-to-day operations.

Scientific Equipment Moving
and Transportation

Each instrument is reviewed before the move. Manufacturer instructions, sensitivity, dimensions, weight and the destination all decide how it gets prepared, packed and transported. Depending on the project, that can include:

  • Ultra-low-temperature freezers and lab refrigerators
  • Centrifuges and analytical instruments
  • Microscopes and optical equipment
  • Chromatography and spectroscopy systems
  • Incubators and environmental chambers
  • Lab benches, casework and workstations

Some instruments need disconnection, recalibration or recommissioning by lab staff or manufacturer-authorized technicians. We sort out who handles what during planning.

Frozen and Temperature-Sensitive
Research Materials

Many lab moves include freezers, frozen samples and other materials that have to stay within a set temperature range.

The right transport method depends on the materials, the conditions they need and how long the move takes. We review those requirements up front and build them into the relocation plan.

Packing, Crating, Storage
and Interstate Moves

We pack and crate sensitive or valuable equipment to protect it in transit, and move lab benches, cabinets and workstations along with the instruments. Storage and staging are available when equipment moves in phases or the new space isn’t ready.

For interstate moves, we plan transport between Philadelphia and research destinations anywhere in the United States.

University City and
Academic Research Labs

University City is one of Philadelphia’s main centers for education, science and medical research, with the University of Pennsylvania, Drexel University, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Penn Medicine and a concentration of lab and innovation space. Developments like uCity Square, Schuylkill Yards and Pennovation keep adding to it.

Academic moves often involve specialized instruments, shared equipment, research materials and several investigators or departments. Planning also has to account for building access, elevators, loading areas and schedules that keep research disruption low.

Medical and Biomedical
Research Facilities

Philadelphia’s medical research community extends past University City to Thomas Jefferson University, Temple University and research facilities tied to the region’s major hospital systems.

Medical lab moves can involve analytical instruments, freezers, lab furniture and diagnostic equipment. In active facilities, we work with facility managers, lab staff, equipment vendors and building operations to set the right moving procedures.

Biotech, Pharma and
Cell and Gene Therapy

Philadelphia has become a major center for cell and gene therapy, supported by universities, biotech startups, pharmaceutical companies and specialized manufacturing. The Philadelphia Navy Yard is a big part of that, with life sciences operations built for research, development and advanced manufacturing.

Pharma and biotech work also extends to King of Prussia, Malvern, Exton and other suburban markets. These moves can call for detailed equipment inventories, coordination around controlled environments and careful scheduling with research or manufacturing staff.

Challenges of Moving
a Laboratory in Philadelphia

Older buildings and tight access. Many Philadelphia research buildings have limited loading areas, shared freight elevators and narrow equipment paths. We confirm access, elevator capacity and equipment dimensions before move day.

Shared equipment and multiple departments. University and hospital moves often involve equipment shared across labs and several groups on different timelines. We build the schedule around each group’s research needs.

Controlled environments. Biotech and cell therapy facilities can have controlled spaces and strict procedures for what comes in and out. We coordinate with facility and quality staff on those requirements as part of the plan.

Laboratory Relocation Experience
Across the Country

Pennsylvania to Dallas: university research lab

We completed an interstate university lab move from Pennsylvania to Dallas, Texas. The equipment included battery research equipment, testing machinery, lab furnaces, vacuum equipment and analytical instruments, with protective packing, detailed inventories and delivery schedules coordinated between both facilities.

Ithaca, New York to Palo Alto, California: instruments and frozen materials

We prepared a cross-country relocation plan for a university research lab moving about 2,800 miles from Ithaca to Palo Alto. The inventory included LC-MS and GC-MS instruments, HPLC systems, reactors, chillers and freezers. Frozen and refrigerated materials were planned as a separate shipment with insulated containers, temperature monitoring and backup refrigeration.

Both projects are relevant to universities and research organizations planning a move into or out of the Philadelphia region.
